uploading photos from 80GB ipod to mac

Just got back off me hols with a 80GB ipod crammed with photos that i don\'t want to lose. Is it as simple as just plugging into the back of my mac CPU and the photos appearing onscreen or being prompted to upload them into iphoto.
I\'m a wee bit afraid i\'ll click on something like a \'reformat\' or \'upgrade\' button and wipe the photos from my ipod (eg as can be done with music going between ipod<-->itunes)

i know how it\'d work on a PC but not a mac, lol,

Can you look at the iPod as a hard drive on the mac and not through itunes?

if so, then you should be able to get to the photo\'s that way without deleteing anything :) if you\'re prompted to open itunes, close it and cancel any updates it begins to do, that\'ll stop it wiping anything :)
