Sound quality of an MP3 player compared to a cell phone

Hi,

this may be a stupid question, but I've been out of the market for quite some time now, so I'd like your opinions.

I'm thinking about buying myself an mp3 player. To be precise, I have my eye on the Sony E444, as I've read some good reviews on it. But the actual choice is not the point here. What I wish to ask is this:

So far, I've been playing mp3 music from my cell phone (I've a Nokia 6120 x, so not a "music phone"). Those of you who have tried both - do you think the difference in sound quality between a player of roughly the sound x of the Sony E444 and an ordinary, non-walkman cell phone is worth the expenditure of buying the dedicated player?

I'm not an audiophile, I just like my music to sound good, like the next guy. I can't really complain about the phone's sound quality, but obviously, there is room for improvement. I usually use the Koss Porta Pro earphones, and I'm not really willing to invest into some higher-grade ones. So, given this, do you think I'll know the difference if I buy a Sony E444 or something close to it?

Damn. Now I know how it got there. Whenever I write c l a s s i c , the forum script changes it to x for some reason. I was not aware that c l a s s i c was a rude word, so that it has to be filtered...

i haven't really tried both but personally I believe that mp3 players with relatively good quality will produce better sound than regular cellphones as it was made solely for that purpose.

Seconded. Mobile phones with an MP3 function generally don't have as high quality chips inside so quality can be poor when compared to an actual standalone MP3 player.

Moreover, 'c l a s s i c' has been filtered to try and cut down on the number of spam posts on the forum (most of the links and other crap is relating to the iPod players of the same name or the Reebok brand).
