Sony NWZ-S638 advise

Hi

I'd like to buy a new mp3 player, and i found sony nwz-s638 very nice. I have never had any pmp from Sony and some friends told me (they have different older models), that they have problems with playing and copying mp3's into it.

My question is, will the player play all the mp3's i copy there or not because of some rights restrictions and so on? Does it support UMS or MTP? Or both of them? I don't want to use any software for managing the music there if possible.

Hi samaersan,

With the older Sony players your friends have, do they rely on the Sony software for transferring files? All Sony players relied on software that was sluggish and difficult to use up until not too long ago, where they became 'drag and drop' devices.

The connection type on the new Sony players, such as the NWZ-S638, is MTP, which means it's compatible with Windows XP and Vista, but it does still allow you to drag and drop using Windows Explorer. As an alternative, Windows Media Player is an easy program to synchronise files to your device.

As for transferring DRM files, it will natively support protected WMA files, but you have to note that it also depends on the protection on the file itself. Some DRM protection limits the number of devices the file is able to be played on, so as long as you've not used the files on lots of other players before then it should be fine. As for MP3 files, these are generally aren't copy-protected, so they should be fine also.
