Online Music Stores and DRM

Hey,

I have a query and I’m hoping you all may have some good suggestions.

I've had bad experiences with DRM music in the past, for a start, I bought a cheap MP3 player without even knowing what DRM was, and the player wasn’t DRM compatible… so most of my music showed up as ‘No rights’ and I couldn’t play it.

But the worst experience was when I got a new computer… as I say I didn’t really know DRM even existed so I ripped a lot of my music into WMA and hadn’t unchecked the box about applying DRM. When I transferred the files across (using a various methods) in most cases the ‘licenses’ did not carry across, I’m now in the ludicrous position of having to re-rip most of my cd’s.

So in my experience it does not ‘Play for sure’ at all…

Of course now I only use MP3 and OGG files. I will never touch a WMA file again if I can help it.

But I don’t mind paying for music. The problem is I don’t want it riddled with crap which tells me what I can and can’t do with it. That is up to my own conscience and local law enforcement, not Microsoft. I have been searching for a legal online music shop which either sells basic MP3’s or at least DRM free files in whichever format. But to no avail. Unfortunately even the music shop x with this wonderful site only seems to sell most music in WMA with the DRM attached.

So I’d like your advice. Are there any major online music stores which have major artists available in non DRM formats?

there are a few out there,

AMP3 have just launched amp3digital (banner across the top of the screen) you can purchase high quality mp3's (320kbps) from there, last i checked there were quite a lot of major artists / new artists on there, Click here and this will take you to amp3digital.com

you also have the likes of emusic.com which is a subscription based service where you can download 30/40/50 etc songs a month Click here to go to www.emusic.com

other than that i'm not entirely sure where else you can download (legally) music from

DRM was designed to protect copyright and curb piracy by preventing a user from copying his/her music, even if acquired legally, to multiple devices or computers. But DRM is dying.
