These are effective if you stick to one style or genre of music, but if you have a varied taste I would recommend a brand like Shure or Ultimate Ears. These two companies specialise in audio, hence why they have some of the best headphones available in their ranges. Obviously this depends on your budget and preference to style of earphones.

I've never really thought to using different headphones for different kinds of music, does it really make a difference? I just normally use very cheap ones at £9.99 out of HMV. I've seen headphones at hundreds of pounds - are they really worth it?
Definitely! There are several factors that make a difference to sound quality, but I think that headphones make the biggest difference. You have to consider different styles, as well as different brands that have different qualities suited to certain styles.
In terms of styles, there's earbud (most likely the style of the ones you would have gotten from HMV for £9.99), ear-canal, over-ear and active noise cancelling.
You do kind of get what you pay for when it comes to headphones as well. But, if you let me know what price range you would consider, and what kind of music you listen to, I can make some suggestions for certain models (to add to the ones mentioned at the top of this topic).
As for the ones at hundreds of pounds, we have a few to try here at the Shop. Feel free to drop by and test some and decide for yourself if you think they're worth it. I can go on for pages about how good they are, but you'll be better making your own mind up :)
I'm looking for some excellent over ear headphones... I listen to almost anything so I'm looking for all-round ones... I have a price range say up to £200 or more as I'm seeing them as an life-long headphones unlike those damn cheap ones that lose sound in one ear after 5 months! any suggestions? spitsoup
There's the Denon AH-D2000 at £243.70, which are well worth the money. The model down from that are the AH-D1001's, at under £100, so it's obvious to say that there's a significant difference between them in the performance.
If Active Noise Cancelling tickles your fancy, there's the Sony MDR- NC500's that are nicely priced at your range at £209.00. We have a demo set at Ocean Terminal if you're in town and want to try them. Aside from that, and still Active Noise Cancelling, you also have the Sennheiser PXC 350's within your price range (£152.00), with the PXC 450's a bit over (£249.00).
I know it's way over your range, but I just have to mention the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre. Awesome cans!
