Basic Start Up Questions.

Postby Lost »

Well just unpacked my anniversary present, a brand new Cowon D2+
But sadly really haven't got much of a clue on how to use it properly.
I posted a message on Cowon Audiophile forum yesterday asking for help, but my plea for help quickly found its way in their Trash Can.
Yeah I know they are very basic questions but just wondered if someone can lead me in the right direction, please!!

First of all which programme do users prefer? WMP 11 - Media Monkey - or another?

After downloading my CD's to the computer - what is the best way to get them across to the D2+ - I see the Sync button at the top of the screen but I'm not sure how it works.

Next, how do you delete songs from the D2+?

And finally, is it possible to get the icon of the CD cover onto the D2+ or is that little icon of the disc they show standard?

Well that's it and I'm sorry they are so basic, but I have to say that I do find the info supplied to be very brief and somewhat uninformative.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
GM

Thanks Elliot for the information and I will give it a try tonight.
Re your point on the LOSSLESS subject. I have read on that Audiophile page I mentioned about ripping to EAC to produce Flac files then transferring them to a format called OGG. All sounds a bit high tech to me. But in your opinion is it worth all the trouble and does the average person actually hear the difference from a WMA file as opposed to an OGG file?
Thanks again for taking the time and trouble to get back to me.

Regards,

GM.

Thanks Again Elliot.

Did not get a chance to try out the D2+ last night. But did manage to set up my settings in Widows Media Player and would just like to check them with you before I start ripping my CD Library.

Went into WMP and selected the Rip Button - Format - mp3
Then back to the Rip Button - Bit Rate - 320Kbps
Not sure if I should leave the burn speed set at Fastest.
Also not sure what boxs I need to tick where it says "Select the file types for which you want WMP to be the default player" I guess it's the mp3 box but not sure how many should be ticked.

Thanks again.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby Lost »

Hi Again,
Well making a right pigs ear of all this but must admit to getting very frustrated now at my own incompetence.

Well finally got down to business last night and to keep it simple I thought that I would record just four CD’s.

I set up WMP as described in my last post and ripped the four CD’s.

Then I plugged in the COWON D2+ and the first thing I noticed was that you cannot do anything while the USB lead is connected. All you can see is that the USB is connected and the unit and that the battery is charging. (Is this Correct?)

Anyway with all albums in WMP I pressed the Sync button and everything came across to the D2+ - However, all the songs were out of order and even played in different albums.

I tried to delete the songs as you suggested but a message kept flashing up which I must be honest I could not read properly, but looked something like the Browser was not supported, and therefore would not delete anything.

Then I tried the other method you suggested of going into My Computer and deleting the songs there. But every time I went to click delete on the songs an error message came up saying that Windows had experienced a problem and would be shut down.

I went back into the Cowon D2 where I played around and finally managed to delete all the music. More luck than skill.

Anyway I got there in the end and managed to get all four albums onto the D2 and to play in correct order, however there has to be an easier way.

I changed one of the procedures in the Boundary setting from 1 to Folders by the before my next attempt.

Anyway, I digress. I drag one album at a time over to the right of WMP and press the Sync key.
The computer tells me to remove the USB. (Now this worries me because I click on the Safely Remove Hardware Icon at the bottom of the computer and the Cowon is not recognized. Anyway I remove the USB lead from the computer, switch on the Cowon and Yeah there is the album. But as I say I have to go through this long procedure to download every album and all this removing of the USB is worrying me, plus boy is it time consuming.

So what did I do wrong please?

Regards,

GM.. :(

Hi there,

Went into WMP and selected the Rip Button - Format - mp3
Then back to the Rip Button - Bit Rate - 320Kbps

Also not sure what boxs I need to tick where it says "Select the file types for which you want WMP to be the default player" I guess it's the mp3 box but not sure how many should be ticked.

Burn speed isn't overly important. The faster you select, the slower your computer will run while it's happening. If you're working on things in the background while ripping then best to select a slightly lower speed.

For default files, again, not too important, but I'd select MP3, WMA and probably WAV as standard.

When the D2+ is connected, the screen on the player should just say USB connected and that the player is charging - it cannot be operated while connected.

When the D2+ is connected in MTP mode, you don't have to select 'Safely Remove Hardware' - it can simply be disconnected at any time as long as the player is not transferring.

As for your files not appearing in order, is WMP11 automatically getting the track data for your CDs as you rip them? i.e. Album and Artist name, track titles etc. Also, are they shown in alphanumerical order rather than track order? If that's the case then it can be easy enough to change the tag data on each track to put the track numbers at the start of the title.

As for not being able to delete files, was the player's hold switch on? This can lock a drive even when it's connected to USB to make it read-only.

The boundary settings is just for playback rather than file transfer, so that won't affect the file transfer process.

Re: Basic Start Up Questions.

Hello

Had my cowon 2 days - constantly freezes up when trying to use DAB and wont delete files as says "not support file delete on music browser"

I DONT have the lock on and think this is stupid that you have to connect to your computer to delete files.

I have to say I'm not impressed and for the money it isn't worth it. I'm seriously considering returning this item as the 7 days are ticking away. i daren't upgrade any firware as i might not be able to return the product in the "pristine" condition.

Any help please as I'm frustrated and DESPERATE!!! for a quick answer as only 4 days left!!!

THANKS!!!

Hi,

Thank you for your message. There is a DAB issue which is affecting some areas of the country. Cowon are working on a fix but you are welcome to raise a return in the meantime if you don't wish to wait for the fix.

Moreover, the easiest way of deleting files is to plug th eplayer in to a PC and doing that way. However, you can delete from the player itself; although you have to browse for folders then select delete instead of doing it from the 'Artist, Album etc' area.
